2024: The Year of the Cicada - A Unique Perspective on Tech

We journey through the eyes of a cicada as it emerges from its 13-year slumber underground into a world of astounding technology advancements

As Written by A. Cicada, Technology Observer

As I emerged from my 13-year slumber underground, I couldn't help but notice a strange buzz in the air. No, it wasn't the familiar hum of cicada wings or the distant chirping of my fellow insects. It was something else entirely. As I climbed out of the earth and took my first tentative steps into the world above, I was greeted by a sight that left me utterly bewildered.

Everywhere I looked, humans were clutching small, rectangular objects in their hands, tapping away furiously with their fingers. These devices seemed to hold some sort of magical power, captivating people of all ages. I later learned that these were called smartphones, and they were just one of the many marvels of the modern age.

You see, the last time I emerged from my underground lair was in the year 2011. Back then, the most advanced piece of technology I encountered was the Kindle Fire tablet. It was a wondrous invention, allowing humans to carry entire libraries in the palm of their hand. But now, in 2024, the world had changed beyond recognition.

Generative AI, they called it. It was like something out of a science fiction novel. This AI had the power to create, to imagine, to think in ways that humans never could. It was as if the boundaries of possibility had been shattered, and the world was suddenly full of endless potential.

But as mind-boggling as this new technology was, I couldn't help but reminisce about the wonders I had witnessed 13 years before that. In 1998, Google was founded, ushering in a new era of information and connectivity. The iMac was released, its sleek design and vibrant colors capturing the imaginations of millions. And who could forget the Y2K scare, when the world held its breath, fearing the collapse of computer systems everywhere?

Of course, I wasn't around to witness the dawn of the internet age, but I heard tales of a time when people communicated through landlines and sent letters through the mail. It all seemed so quaint compared to the world I now found myself in.

And then there were the gadgets of yesteryear, like my previous emergence in 1985 to see the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the first Windows operating system. These relics of a bygone era may seem primitive now, but at the time, they were the cutting edge of technology.

As I basked in the warm glow of the summer sun, marveling at the world around me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for being able to witness the incredible advancements of human civilization.

Who knows what wonders the future holds? Perhaps in another 13 years, I'll emerge once again to find a world beyond my wildest dreams. But for now, I'll just enjoy the simple pleasures of being above ground and soaking in the sights and sounds of this brave new world.
